After the invasion at the end of the twelfth century this famous Norman family owned vast estates. The leading de Angulos family adopted the surname MacCostello, but this did not apply to the Cork branch. Notable people of the name were Sir Richard Nagle, 1699, who was Attorney General and speaker of the Irish Parliament in 1689, and Admiral Sir Edmond Nagle, 1757-1830, who captivated King George IV by his 'rollicking Irish humour', and his ability to tell a good story. He became a great favourite of that Monarch.The Nagle family crest (or coat of arms) came into existence many centuries ago. The process of creating these coats of arms began as early as the eleventh century although a form of Proto-Heraldry may have existed in some countries prior to this, including Ireland. The new more formalized art of Heraldry made it possible for families and even individual family members to have their very own family crest, coat of arms, including Nagle descendants.
