Lynch Coat of Arms, Family Crest and Lynch Family History
Lynch Family History
The family history of the ancient name Lynch was found in the irishsurnames.com archives. Lynch is one of the most distinguished of all Irish surnames, being the fusion of two different races. One was de Lynch who came with the Normans and the other was Labradh Longseach, who was King of Ireland in the sixth century. These Lynchs settled in Counties Clare, Sligo, Limerick and Donegal. The Norman Lynchs were leaders of the fourteen tribes of Galway and built many strong castles to protect their families and wealth. They first settled in Meath where Lynch's Knock, the site of the Battle in 1647, perpetuates their occupation. The Gaelic Lynchs, formerly called O'Lynch, declined in prominence after the Norman invasion. The Lynch family crest (or coat of arms) came into existence many centuries ago. The process of creating these coats of arms began as early as the eleventh century although a form of Proto-Heraldry may have existed in some countries prior to this, including Ireland. The new more formalized art of Heraldry made it possible for families and even individual family members to have their very own family crest, coat of arms, including Lynch descendants.
